The moment that the level of devotion to XTC’s music becomes truly apparent is when the chap standing next to your correspondent starts harmonising to the chorus of Towers Of London. Not just singing along or struggling to hit the notes, mind; this is pitch-perfect singing from a complete stranger losing themselves in the moment while complementing the action that’s taking place onstage. Under normal circumstances, such behaviour would serve to irritate, yet given the distinctly quirky nature of the fare on offer, it makes perfect sense. And all around, audience members are moving in time while those feeling energetic or simply defying the ravages of time are actually jumping up and down in front of the stage.
