TINGLING FUN
SPIDER-MAN THE VIDEO GAME 1991
Scrolling fighters proved to be quite popular for licensing, but Sega went a step further with its slick adaptation of the Spider-Man brand. While it features plenty of satisfying fighting and caters for up to four players (Spidey is joined by Hawkeye, Black Cat and Sub-Mariner), Sega moves beyond expectations of what’s typical for the genre. At certain points in the game the action zooms right out, presenting a miniature version of the superheroes and emphasising platforming, which certainly makes it stand out from its peers. It’s highly entertaining, particularly when playing as Spider-Man, as you can scale walls and even hang upside-down. Spidey has plenty of scraps with classic enemies as well, including Venom, Sandman, Doctor Doom and Kingpin. Sadly, Spider-Man The Video Game was never ported to home systems, meaning many didn’t get to experience it.
