As this was planned to be the last
R-Type
game, developer Irem went all out to ensure its former flagship series left a lasting impression. It achieved this by offering alternate routes through stages, over 50 Force upgrades and a staggering 101 ships to choose from. It’s not the prettiest shooter, but R-Type Final’s challenging gameplay and numerous customisable options means that any reservations about how it looks dissipate on seeing the complexity and longevity it offers next to similar PS2 shmups.
