Apace in the sun
June brings everything to life: gardens are aflutter with birds and, with your help, can be packed with colour and flavour, too

Create… theatre in a pot
Containers create a focal point whatever the size of your plot, so go big on pots for impact until autumn. The best are like gardens in miniature, with height, fullness and texture. For success every time, follow ‘queen of colour’ Sarah Raven’s proven recipe that makes every pot a stage set. The thriller is the star of the show – a pelargonium or dahlia, say – placed centrally. Fillers, such as salvia or snapdragon, are the supporting act, and froth with abundance. The spiller softens pot edges – try calibrachoa, the petunia’s daintier cousin.
