Harlequin SE5a/ Night Fighter
As a night fighter in the Home defence units the SE5a was a less than ideal choice. Its water cooled engine required time to warm up, which put it at an immediate disadvantage in a scramble situation. Further to this the design of the nose meant that the SE5a was difficult to land at night. Despite this a number of Home Defence squadrons were equipped with the type towards the end of December 1917.
