Do you recall your first interaction with and impression of Wicked as a show?
I had friends who worked on the original Broadway show, working in the costume shops. So I had this backstage view of what that process was like early on. Then to see it realised on stage, to experience that world that they created was really amazing. I was really blown away by what they had done.
When you started work on the film, were there any costumes that you immediately knew would be a challenge?
It was really the overall world. When you experience the musical, you have an idea emblazoned in your head about how beautiful this world is. So the challenge for me became, how do I recreate that vision and still pull in the audience to engage with this new way of seeing the world? It’s capturing the energy of what was created originally, but also revisualising it.
