As far as I know, I’m still the only violin maker in Bochum, north-west Germany. As well as my love for the city, I decided to set up here for practical reasons: I looked around for somewhere with a lot of musical culture and no luthiers. As well as a professional symphony orchestra, there’s a large music school here, and some semi-professional ensembles, including one made up of students at the university. Up until I started, I think they had to go to the neighbouring cities of Dortmund and Essen to get a new bridge or a bow rehair. he workshop is in the Ehrenfeld district, a nice area where lots of musicians live. My window looks out on one of the main thoroughfares, the Königsallee, a long avenue with shady trees on either side.
