Energise your new year

Do you think of exercise as a dirty word? Or as something you feel you should be doing, if only you could find the enthusiasm? The way we think about fitness makes all the difference – and, with a small change of mindset, it can get much easier to find an activity you love and want to do every day.

So why do so many of us feel turned off by just the thought of exercise? Often, you develop your attitude to fitness while you’re at school. ‘If PE was all about being made to do things, often in a cold, muddy field, it’s not surprising you didn’t find it much fun,’ says Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World’s head of nutrition and research. Often, school sports are centred around winning, so if you weren’t the first to be picked for a team, or streaking ahead on race day, you probably couldn’t see the benefits of doing it. And it’s likely that as soon as you got the choice to stop, you did. ‘PE-style exercise is not the only way to improve your fitness, though,’ says Jacquie Lavin.
