Literary consultant Helen Corner-Bryant attempts to pin down one of the most common writers’ questions

Q What makes for ‘good writing’? I’ve seen many popular books where the writing is unanimously viewed as subpar. Can you really publish a novel without this (seemingly crucial) component?
A I wonder what you mean by good writing? [It’s a great question and one we chat about a lot!] If it’s succinct, lyrical prose that is thought provoking and explores human nature then there are plenty of stunning literary and commercially successful examples that stand the test of time: in recent times try Eimear McBride, A Girl is a Half Formed Thing, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi.
