To read an extract from Bedtime Story
‘When my partner was diagnosed with an aggressive leukemia, I turned to the bookshelf to find a tale to help our two young sons. Bedtime Story, my own recently published book, details the quest to find what practical lessons children’s literature – with its innocent orphans and evil adults, magic, monsters and anthropomorphic animals – can teach about hard times and resilience in real life. I discovered many of our best-loved writers, from the Brothers Grimm to Frances Hodgson Burnett and Tolkien and Dahl, suffered childhood bereavements, and these losses often shaped their enchanted worlds.
