Mags4Dorset is running a competition for 1,000-word short stories with the theme of ‘plastic nightmare’. There is a prize pot of £400 and the entry fee is £5, £3 each subsequent. The closing date is 30 October.

Abir Mukherjee has won the £15,000 WIlbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize for his second novel, A Necessary Evil. The winner in the category for best unpublished novel was Bill Swiggs for Blood in the Dust. Bill won a £7,500 Writer’s Adventure Research Award and has also signed a publishing contract with Bonnier Zaffre. Two young adventure writers won Author of Tomorrow Awards worth £1,500 and £1,000: Alice Cox for The Death of a Soldier and Mariam Wallace for The Princes’ Gem.
