INTERNATIONAL
ZINE SCENE
by PDR Lindsay-Salmon
Long-running journal Shenandoah has a new editor, Beth Staples, who still wants writing in their old print tradition, ‘displaying passionate understanding, formal accomplishment and serious mischief ’.
Submissions are open until 1 April, 2019, for ‘short stories, essays, excerpts of novels in progress, poems, comics, and translations of all the above’. Beth likes writers who ‘think globally’ and do ‘not assume white people are literature’s default characters’.
Submit fiction and creative non-fiction, up to 8,000 words, up to five poems in a single file, or comics as pdf files.
Response time is up to twelve weeks. Payment is ‘as much as we can depending on available funds’.
Submit through the website: https://shenandoahliterary.org
Verity La is an Australian zine embracing just about everything and everyone: ‘short fiction and poetry, cultural comment, photomedia, interviews of literature, film and contemporary music people…new voices, different voices, progressive voices’ and they like words with impact, ‘writing that gets you in the head as well as the gut’.
