Spending time in nature has heaps of wellbeing benefits, and the latest research has shown that improving our body image is one of them. But why? Lead researcher Viren Swami, of Anglia Ruskin University, says there are a number of reasons: getting out in nature distances people both physically and mentally from appearance-focused situations, while spending time in an environment with depth and complexity restricts negative appearance-related thoughts. Natural environments also hold your attention (this is known as ‘soft fascination’), which can foster self-compassion, helping you to appreciate your body as part of a wider ecosystem requiring care. And, finally, when outdoors we’re often engaging in activities that focus attention on what the body can do, rather than how it looks. Now that’s a beautiful thing.
