Worried you’re getting forgetful? It’s true our minds age, but by adopting these simple brain habits, you can strengthen your memory and cut your risk of dementia

CLEA WARBURTON is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at Bristol University who researches memory and how information is stored in the brain

Making new memories is a chemical process which involves making proteins. For this to happen, you have to get the right nutrients from your food. Cut back on red meat, as a diet rich in dark meats can lead to you accumulating too much iron in your body, and that’s been linked to developing brain-slowing plaque proteins. Avoid too many ‘ferric’ or ‘ferrous’ fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals, bread and flour. Opt for plenty of antioxidant-rich fruit, such as blueberries, and eat crunchy veg like carrots, celery and green peppers. These contain luteolin, which boosts blood flow and strengthens brain cell connectivity. Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, eggs, walnuts and flax seeds also improve cerebral blood flow and reduce inflammation.
