Writer Stevie Martin tries an intense swimming session

Ten minutes into the Hydro class at one of Virgin Active’s swankiest gyms in central London, I’m fairly certain I might die. I’m not a strong swimmer and, as the name Hydro might suggest, this is all about the swimming. Specifically, front crawl. Thankfully, instructor Louise is being incredibly helpful.

‘Just do whatever you can, and pause when you need to,’ she tells me, as I barely complete a length. Over in the very fast lane (Louise has banned the idea of a slow lane – so there’s the fast lane, quite fast lane, and very fast lane) there’s a man who is halfway towards the 2.6km we’re aiming for. ‘We’ve got fins if you need them, or we could work on your technique? A lot of the beginners won’t be able to finish the distance – don’t worry!’ Even without the ‘fins’ (big scuba diving flippers), I look like a berk, mainly because I’m wearing children’s goggles (age six-14), bought by accident that morning. And my front crawl resembles a woman drowning. ‘We’d normally assess someone’s swimming level, and if they needed, get some lessons to up their confidence first. It is pretty intense!’ Louise says.
