Did you think you were a creative person before you became an artist?
Looking back, yes. I was always observing small things – the sublime colour and pattern of a blackbird egg, the caterpillars in the yard, the beautiful hawthorn flowers. My parents weren’t at all artistic but my father in particular had a love of nature and taught me to look at the world around me. I loved drawing, but an art career wasn’t even on the radar when I was at school. Art was seen as a one-way street to the dole office, so unless you had another means of support, it was simply not a viable career.
