Do you yearn to be creative but don’t know how? Helen Elliott left the Probation Service to become one of Wales’ most successful artists. She talks to us about climbing over those mental barriers and enjoying finding her own inspiration

Q & A

Did you think you were a creative person before you became an artist?

Looking back, yes. I was always observing small things – the sublime colour and pattern of a blackbird egg, the caterpillars in the yard, the beautiful hawthorn flowers. My parents weren’t at all artistic but my father in particular had a love of nature and taught me to look at the world around me. I loved drawing, but an art career wasn’t even on the radar when I was at school. Art was seen as a one-way street to the dole office, so unless you had another means of support, it was simply not a viable career.
