When you first go vegan, this can feel like a daunting question. I think this is because it’s a pretty emotional decision for most people, and being asked to justify it can feel like an attack when it’s really just an enquiry. If you do feel a little wobbly, then my suggestion would be to move it away from the more emotive animal-based reasoning and give a fact-based answer around the environment. This tactic is also good for preventing ‘defence mode’ in the other person and can lead to a bigger conversation that includes animals. After nearly five years of being asked to justify my choices, my go-to response is this: “I learnt some stuffthat it’s impossible to unlearn and going vegan was the obvious next step.” It’s then up to the other person to take the conversation further and I feel like I’ve been honest without making anyone feel uncomfortable.
