Born to a mining family in Biddulph, Staffordshire, Jack Simcock (1929-2012) is best known for a series of bleak, sombre oils on board of the Mow Cop area in which he lived for much of his life. This typical 12 x 19in (31 x 49cm) oil on board, signed and dated to 1965, sold above estimate at Peter Wilson in Cheshire on September 11.
