Roy Oxlade (1929- 2014) emerged in the 1950s as one of a distinguished group of painters, including Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, who studied under David Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic in London. He went on to become an influential painter, teacher and writer, best known for his wild, spontaneous brushwork and bold colours.
Though his name has been eclipsed by the likes of Auerbach and Kossoff a series of shows in recent years, including the first solo exhibition of his work since his death at the Alison Jacques Gallery in 2018, have helped raise the artist’s profile.
