Emporium Antiques in Liskeard currently has on its site an item of local interest. This is a memorial shield, right, to the Honourable Thomas Agar-Robartes (1880-1915) who was elected as a Liberal MP for his home town of Bodmin in the 1906 general election.
He lost his seat the same year following a controversial election petition by the defeated candidate alleging illegal payments to potential voters.
Agar-Robartes was elected to the St Austell Division of Cornwall in a by-election in 1908, holding the seat until his death at the Battle of Loos in 1915 following action for which he was recommended for a Victoria Cross.
