PRINCE
THE RAINBOW CHILDREN UP ALL NITE WITH PRINCE: THE ONE NITE ALONE COLLECTION
SONY/LEGACY
The latest in Sony’s clear-up operation to get Prince’s post-Warner albums into shape hits the really thorny years here. Released in 2001, The Rainbow Children was Prince’s first LP out under his own name since becoming Symbol eight years earlier. Prescient on music’s future, Prince gave away album highlight The Work Part 1 as a free download on illegal filesharing site Napster. Driven by double-bass, it’s a hectic workout which would fit on Diamonds And Pearls. It’s also one of the few listenable moments on an album dominated by solos that go nowhere, with Prince’s voice distorted in a hilarious subsonic rumble that you could argue presages Autotune, but only if you’re a clot. At least for collectors, The Rainbow Children is finally available again to experience its full horror – the rainbow-coloured slipmat included in its vinyl edition is gorgeous.
