DAFT PUNK
DAFT PUNK'S SUCCESS WAS DOWN TO BEING EMBRACED BY THE UK. THEIR NAME CAME FROM A MELODY MAKER REVIEW, THEY WERE SIGNED TO A SCOTTISH LABEL, AND THEY HAD HELP FROM THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS. BUT THEY PAID THEIR DUES BY REDEFINING UK DANCE MUSIC

Daft Punk’s Guy- Manuel de Homem- Christo and Thomas Bangalter met at school where both shared a love of skiving off lessons and listening to The Beach Boys. That love found its way into the name of their first band, Darlin’ (named after a Beach Boys track), who would come to the attention of Stereolab and then Melody Maker, before experiences of The Orb, Parisian raves, Detroit techno and Chicago house introduced an even more electronic leaning to their sound. “We think music can be wonderful in any style,” is a rare quote from Guy-Manual from a 1997 Mixmag interview, but pretty much sums up their early ambitions: to produce a crossover of genres that would appeal to the world.
