Subscriptions we’ve cancelled in 2025
Tech firms are increasingly locking you into contracts for services you can get cheaper (or free) elsewhere. Three Computeractive writers tell you what they’ve recently cancelled and what they’ve moved to
DANIEL BOOTH WHAT I’VE CANCELLED
Microsoft 365 Personal
When I signed up to Microsoft 365 Personal in 2022 I thought I’d easily fill its 1TB storage with videos, but I’ve got nowhere close. I still like Excel and Word, but not so much that I’m prepared to pay for them. And Copilot is yet to convince me that it’s more than a glorified Clippy. Paying £84.99 a year for all this was madness.
AND WHAT I SWITCHED TO
Mega, LibreOffice, Google Gemini
I now spread my files across free online storage supplied by (at the last count) eight different companies. Mega (https:// mega.io) offers the most (20GB, see screenshot below), followed by Google (15GB) then pCloud (10GB). LibreOffice is a decent alternative to Microsoft Office, though I still use the free online versions of Excel and Word. I won’t miss Copilot at all. Google’s Gemini AI assistant works much better when I use Docs, Sheets and Slides, although it hasn’t boosted my productivity that much.
