Sorry about this. No, let’s start again. I spoke at a library event recently, one linked to a county book festival which included local authors giving a brief rundown about their work. Especially early in a writing career, something like this is an opportunity. You never know who will be listening, what contacts you might make, how one thing might lead to another. And, besides, you might just sell some books.
One young woman took her turn. She had just published her first novel, something that anyone, reader or writer, would regard as an achievement, yet she started with an elaborate apology. She was new to all this, she said, she had only had one book published, she was very much at the beginning of her writing.
