SWITCH 2
Ignition Switch
A muted Switch 2 reveal emphasises continuity over innovation. Could that be exactly what’s required?
After months of speculative gossip, Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement on January 16 was low key to the point of disgruntled petulance. If it had gone to the trouble of ending the trailer with a slogan, it may have read something like, “Here. Happy now?” In its two minutes and 22 seconds, we learned, well, pretty much what we already knew, albeit unofficially: this is a direct successor to Nintendo’s triumphant hybrid, slightly bigger and more businesslike in its black livery, but near-identical in design. Details in the reveal include a wider kickstand, Joy-Cons that snap rather than slide onto the handheld unit, and chunkier analogue sticks that, fingers crossed, will be less prone to drift.
