Before the invention of videogames, electromechanical attractions ruled the arcade. Many had ‘screens’, displaying primitive forms of action using projectors, but there was always room for a good old-fashioned shooting gallery, with physical targets knocked down by shots fired from hefty, cabinet-mounted rifles. In those days, projectiles were handled via light sensors – paving the way for a genre that still thrives today – but here in 2025 we can go one better. The guns of Cyberpunk 2077: Turf Wars fire plastic pellets to knock down physical targets illuminated by what manufacturer LAI Games calls “projection mapping technology”, which lays videogame-style visuals across the playfield. Various weapon modes come into play, but spraying targets with the machine-gun option feels like it has the strongest potential for putting a grin on your face, the cabinet’s acrylic divider working overtime in preventing pellets from pinging back and taking out an eye or two. No, we have no idea how CD Projekt’s RPG was implemented as a source, but we’re not complaining.
