The ultimate Minecraft movie would be about the game’s worldwide audience as much as its mechanics and iconography. It would be a movie about the communities that have been created and the connections that have been made. It would find room to examine the implausible beauty that ingenious minds have brought to life within Mojang’s endless sandbox. Sadly, A Minecraft Movie turns the whole thing into a predictable comic adventure in which Jack Black and Jason Momoa get plucked from the American midwest and trapped in the Overworld. The end result is never less than blandly effective, but given the wonders that spill out of this game daily, it’s hard not to wish for something more engaged with what Minecraft means to the millions of people who have found a home inside it.
