TerrorBytes: The Evolution Of Horror Gaming
bit.ly/terror-firmer
This five-part docuseries, available for purchase, slices horror gaming into themed episodes, from FMV games to the indie scene and, to open, survival horror. Here, it charts early examples of stalking enemies before settling on Sweet Home as the prototypical experience avant la lettre. As it advances through the ’90s and ’00s, the likes of Sam Barlow and John Romero offer comment, while primary sources include Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Eternal Darkness director Dennis Dyack. As it narrows focus to the evolution of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, however, the absence of key voices, not least Shinji Mikami, feels glaring. It’s also hard to discern a strong thesis across this historical swoop, as much as we enjoy the guided tour of digital chills.
