THE large earthquake which struck Turkey and neighbouring Syria on February 6, killing more than 20,000 people, has caused severe disruption to the Turkish rail network, affecting more than 1200km of track and damaging multiple bridges and 175 tunnels, including part of the new 25.5km ‘Gaziray’ suburban commuter railway Gaziantep, near the epicentre; this opened as recently as November 5.
