Why would anyone leave the Christmas drinks shopping until the last minute? It’s so easy to stock up in advance, nothing is going to go off and, anyway, choosing the festive booze is far too important to leave to a flustered trolley dash. So here, well in advance of the big festivities, is a selection of bargain wines for parties, smarter ones for special moments, plus some chic but simple cocktails. That’s your bottle shop, sorted. Cocktails

If you’re mixing cocktails for a group, stick to easy recipes based around a key spirit. Here are five classics (or, rather, my twists on classics) that work well when made up in volume. All serve 10, they can be prepped swiftly using jugs rather than fiddly cocktail shakers (I strain them with a fine-mesh kitchen sieve) and you can scale them up easily. They’re based on easy-to-buy ingredients.
