BREAKTHROUGHS FOR OMOREGIE AND FEARON

TRACK & FIELD

JULY 16

LOUGHBOROUGH EAP OPEN MEETING, Loughborough

IN ALMOST perfect sprinting conditions, Joel Fearon, who missed the British trials, won the 100m in 10.04 from Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who matched his PB with 10.08. Fearon had run 10.15 in the heats.

Another athlete showing form too late to be included in the Olympic team was European under-23 hurdles champion David Omoregie. He set a PB of 13.46 in the heats and then a sensational 13.25 in the final to win by more than five metres, top the UK rankings and go fifth all-time in Britain.

Only Colin Jackson (12.91), Tony Jarrett (13.00), Will Sharman (13.16) and Andy Turner (13.22) have run faster among Brits and he has now gone past world medallist Jon Ridgeon, Andrew Pozzi and Lawrence Clarke.

Birchfield’s Sudanese athlete Sadam Koumi was first in the 400m in 45.95.

In the field, the highlight came from Zane Duquemin, who won the discus with 61.29m.

Karla Drew was successful in the two women’s hurdles races, clocking 13.46 and 13.62. Behind the 13.62, European indoor heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson, in her first competition since Gotzis in May, ran a below-par 13.85 for third place.
