1. Mo Farah says he’s in the shape of his life, and produced his fastest 5000m in four years to suggest he may not be far wrong. By his own admission his season has been “average” until now, but on the basis of Saturday there looks to be no stopping him.
2. Adam Gemili’s 2016 had been a slow-burner until the Anniversary Games but the 22-year-old now appears to have found form with a strong 20.07 run. His record shows he’s rarely failed to live up to his expectations at a championships, and there’s no reason to believe Rio will be any different.
3. The showdown between seasoned champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and young pretender Katarina Johnson-Thompson promises to be one of the biggest clashes of the Games. Johnson-Thompson came out of the London weigh-in marginally stronger, but on points it looks like being tough to separate them.
4. Both men’s and women’s 4x100m squads are in as good a form as ever, the women crushing the national record and both men’s teams coming close too. However, on the men’s side there are concerns individually with James Dasaolu having not run a wind-legal sub-10.1 time in two years and the likes of CJ Ujah, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Richard Kilty’s times fluctuating significantly.
5. The brilliance of Mo Farah and Laura Muir meant the form of Britain’s other distance runners was overlooked. Season’s best runs from Laura Weightman, Steph Twell, Eilish McColgan, Shelayna Oskan-Clarke and an 800m PB from Charlie Grice show that a number of Britain’s distance cohort may not be too wide of the mark if harbouring some lofty aspirations for Brazil.
