Black+White Photography  |  April 2010
All my life I’ve loved train journeys. It might be something to do with having been brought up in a small seaside town at the end of the train line. There was something magical about taking a train that began at home and took you anywhere you wanted. This morning a photographer friend called me to say she had booked herself onto the sleeper that goes from Paddington to St Ives. The track goes along the coast and you arrive in the morning, looking down at the sea – how amazing is that? My immediate reaction was to gasp, ‘Take me some pictures’ – I didn’t care what she used – hi-end SLR, mobile phone or Box Brownie – I just wanted the pictures so I could experience a little bit of her journey. Ideally I wanted her to email them to me right away but (particularly if she was using the Brownie) I was prepared to wait. The point of this story really is to say – isn’t photography wonderful?
