Lucy Charles-Barclay celebrates historic win at Challenge Roth
25-year-old British triathlete Lucy Charles-Barclay recorded a historic win at the prestigious Challenge Roth in Germany on Sunday, 7th July, setting a PB and the sixth all-time fastest female time over an Ironman distance.
Lucy vanquished any demons of last year’s heartbreak as the 2018 runner-up won by seven minutes and two seconds this year, crossing the line in a personal best time of 8 hours, 31 minutes and 9 seconds.
The Red Bull athlete told Women’s Running: “I am over the moon winning yesterday – that’s what I came for, the win, it wasn’t about the time. I wasn’t even aware of how good the time was when I was competing. I knew I had a gap on the other girls, so I felt it was going well.”
Victory became even sweeter for Charles-Barclay as she recorded her first sub-three marathon in a full distance Ironman. “I was so pleased with my run – the last 10K of an Ironman is usually the worst, when you are so tired, but during that 10K I knew I could win the race,” she told WR.
