Don’t you get scared running on the trails on your own?” It’s a question that I’m asked more than any other, especially the women that I coach and run with. For them, there seems to be a hesitation, an innate fear, about running on trails. Their anxiety seems much more apparent when talking about running trails than in urban or built-up areas.
I have run on trails, mainly solo, since 2016 and – of course – I would be lying if I said that in those early days my heart rate did not increase, or palms start to sweat, when I was navigating my body through a part of the countryside that I was not familiar with. You’d often find me standing by a stile having a word with myself about entering a field with even a hint of a cow present. But – in every week, month and year since – I can honestly say that my confidence has grown and I have felt so much safer running on trails solo than I do on roads. I can also say that in that same time I have been subject to 10 x more harassment and heightened feelings of fear running on the roads than I ever have on trails. This is part of the reason my love for trail running has grown.
