Halo Sport

If you’re unsettled by the idea of brain training (allowing technology to tinker with your mind), then look away now. The Halo Sport is a headset designed to electrically stimulate your brain during exercise, known as neuropriming, which apparently strengthens the connection between mind and muscles, making you a better runner. You wet little ‘primers’ and place the headset firmly on your head, fire up the app and allow the headset to send e-messages to your brain for 20 minutes as you warm up. Stimulation strength can be selected from a scale of 1-10, though they’re all almost imperceptible, even if your scalp can get a little warm. This process is called hyper-learning or ‘hyperplasticity’, said to refine the brain’s ability to adapt to training.
After your 20-minute neuropriming session, you’re apparently blessed with increased neuroplasticity that lasts for about an hour, so bang out your best ever interval session. Or possibly start talking like C3P0. Does it work? The Halo Sport website shows several US sportspeople you probably haven’t heard of who believe in it. We did have some good sessions after use, but it’s difficult to be sure that’s down to the Halo. Ultimately, it was all a bit strange. But who’s to say it doesn’t work?
