Coasting it Running on the edge
Love the idea of running right by the sea, but not sure where to start? We asked the women who love to live on the edge how to cope with high cliff s, high tides and high-end views…
Words Damian Hall
Britain may not have huge mountains, steaming rainforests or vast deserts, but it does have one hell of a lot of coast. Eleven thousand and 73 miles (17,820km) of it, according to those diligent fellows at Ordnance Survey. That’s more than Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Chile and India combined. Okay, not combined. Individually. But it’s still incredible.
While we might not be blessed with some geographical elements found elsewhere, we’ve got the world’s 14th longest coastline: ie, much, much more than our fair share. The edge of our country is one incredibly long stretch of curvy beaches, coy coves, plunging cliff -tops, spectacular views – and the occasional rickety Victorian pier – all just waiting to be played on.
We’re also blessed with endless coastal paths. While the England Coast Path is still a year or two from fruition, sections are being readied right now and we already have trails around the entire South West (Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset), not to mention all of Wales, with the glorious Wales Coast Path. Many other sections of coast have footpaths already, with highlights including the famous white cliff s of Sussex and Kent, Norfolk’s flat but wild edge (Blakeney Point nature reserve in particular), Cumbria’s lumpy lines, Northumberland’s rugged and remote coast. Not to mention Anglesea, the Isles of Skye, Arran, Wight… The list just goes on and on.
