HEAVEN AND HELL
MICHELLE CARNEGIE FINDS RUNNING 90K DOESN’T GET ANY EASIER, AT HER 13TH COMRADES MARATHON
Comrades 2018. Where do I even start? Maybe with the most asked question: why run 90K on some of the most mountainous terrain in South Africa? For me the answer probably lies in what the legendary Bruce Fordyce, nine-times winner of the Comrades Marathon, once said: “When you cross that finish line you will forever be changed. You will have the ability to do anything that you set your mind to.”
That is why on June 10 at 5:30am, I lined up for my 13th Comrades Marathon.
Remarkably, this race, with its intimidating distance and terrifying race profile, draws roughly 20,000 runners from over 60 countries annually. Those who fail to break the 12-hour cut offwill get no medal. It’s a race that humbles both the fastest and the slowest runner. I’m no exception. I have been humbled many times, but I have also been rewarded just as many times. And that’s why I keep going back. Because if I’ve just run that, then surely anything is possible?
