Losing your battle with cancer in your thirties may seem like a life never fully lived. And yet Gabriel Grunewald, the American track star, used the last 10 years of her life to show women, runners and the world that you can be both brave and make every day you have count. Grunewald was first diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a cancer found in the salivary glands, in 2009. She went through surgery and radiation that summer, but fought back to finish second at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. That summer she took 10 seconds off her 1500m PB, running 4:12.06 in Belgium.
In 2010 she faced cancer again, this time in her thyroid. Following surgery to remove her thyroid she fought back again, and returned to strength, and to the track. From 2012 to 2015, she ran a series of personal bests in events ranging from 800m to 5,000m.
Even with her health issues, Gabe showed how to live life. In 2016 cancer returned in her liver. Yet, after having more than half of her liver removed, she again returned to running. In 2017 more tumours were found in her liver, however she wasn’t prepared to stop fighting and continued to race, revealing to the world her resilience. She made everyone who met her realise it’s okay to struggle, but that didn’t mean you had to give up on your dreams. Gabe showed us all how to achieve success when faced with uncertainty.
