HISTORICAL DIVISION
MR DAINTON (Mailbag, 3rd July), you are not alone in getting that sickening, kick-in-the-stomach feeling when hearing that yet another of our stars has left our sport and turned traitor to join that other lot.
I am slightly younger than Mr Dainton, but fully aware of the history of our game, and feel that younger supporters of The Greatest Game should read about the division that existed for many, many years between the two codes.
That division, which was cultivated for decades by the BBC and the national press, and still exists today to a slightly lesser extent, has never gone away.
What makes it even more galling, is that we Rugby League supporters always knew we had the superior game, the better players, the more skilful athletes, and the better product. I think this was proved beyond doubt when Wigan won the seven-a-side tournament at Twickenham in 1996 and the Bulls in 2001, playing under union rules.
