LLNN-affiliated hardcore crew set off on a madcap anime adventure
Spinner might be the only hardcore album released this year that starts with the sound of a J-pop opening theme coming from an aged, crackly cathode ray TV. Eyes describe their new album as having a loose concept around a fictional 80s anime series, drawing on singer Victor Kaas’s adolescent escapism, but the influence on the music dissipates after this point. It’s more of a straightforward fuck-’em-up punk session, in and out in 25 minutes, with the band’s noise rock roots taking on the swinging barnburner rock’n’roll of 2000s hardcore. The punchy bass tone betrays the presence of LLNN members in the band and, as with the laser-zapping riffs of The Captain, the effect is akin to Car Bomb hijacking an Every Time I Die practice. Having said that, the reach for that transportation back to childhood bedrooms is only really there in the smashed furniture. ■■■■■■■■■■
