LAST NIGHT A RECORD CHANGED MY LIFE
Beth Orton
The folktronicist hymns Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On (Tamla, 1971).
I can’t remember when I first heard it – Iremember being in my first flat in Queen’s Park in about 1994, it could have been earlier, it could have been in my bedroom in Dalston when I was 14, it could have been 1984, I have no fucking clue. Then, the other day, I was on an aeroplane listening to it, going through the sky on a beautiful evening. And I was just like, Fucking hell, oh my god, this is something else. You’ve always known this record, but at that moment I just sort of heard it in a very un-bridled way, forgetting all the narrative around him, just really listening.
