FAT POSSUM. CD/DL/LP
UPSTAIRS, IN an anonymous Red Roof Inn hotel, somewhere along a stretch of American asphalt, some people are having loud sex. Their television is blaring, their feeble attempt to mask the apparent shame of simply being human. A floor below, the singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews – stopping for the night en route into exile from her own relationship, an air freshener dangling on her rear-view mirror again – can hear them, anyway. The failed concealment reminds her of the way people lie about everything. “That’s just like this world we’re in,” she sings, recalling that moment in the transfixing On The Line, strings tightening like a hand on a headboard. “We cover up each truth with a void.”
