WORD
Microsoft clearly has ambitions for Copilot in Word to become far more than a glorified Clippy, but much work is yet to be done
WHAT CAN IT DO?
Compose business letters
Even though the sophistication of AI writing continues to improve, it’s still gobsmackingly obvious when AI has written an entire report or anything of substantial length. However, for jobs such as writing short business letters, the Copilot AI is perfect.
Without wishing to sound condescending, it’s ideal for people who struggle with the written word or have a condition such as dyslexia. You can tell the AI what you want the letter to say in telegramese – it doesn’t even have to be spelt correctly – and it will compose the letter in a professional tone with no spelling or grammatical errors (any smart arses writing in to tell us we should use it to compose PC Pro features will be given the shortest of shrift).
You can generate a draft letter by clicking on the tiny Copilot icon that appears when you start a new line/ paragraph, by using the keyboard shortcut ALT+I (Command+/ on a Mac), or by clicking the Copilot button in the Ribbon interface.
Summarising and querying documents
If you frequently find yourself wading through long Word documents trying to find the nuggets of information you need, the Copilot AI could be an enormous timesaver.
