Follow these tricks to fine-tune your lighting and perfect the coloured shadow look
DISTANCE & HARDNESS IN SHADOWS
The distance between your light source and your subject will have a strong bearing on the hardness of the shadows that the subject casts. The further away the light source, the more hard-edged the shadows become. This is because smaller light sources create harder shadows, and when we move a light further away, its size becomes smaller in relation to the subject. Think of the sun -it’s a huge source of light, but it’s a vast distance away, so direct sunlight creates hardedged shadows. If the sun were much closer then the shadows would be softer – although in reality, shadow softness would be the least of our problems then!
