‘CASTLE’ RESCUES CASTLE: A remarkable working occurred on the morning of July 10, when No. 57605 Totnes Castle failed west of Truro while hauling the previous night’s Paddington to Penzance ‘Night Riviera’ sleeper. Rescue came in the form of a ‘Castle’ HST set with power cars Nos. 43156/43098, the main image showing the 14-vehicle formation (2+4 HST, seven Mk.3s and ‘57’) east of St Austell at Carlyon Bay as it heads to Plymouth Laira, the inset showing it just west of St Austell crossing Gover Viaduct. At Laira, the HST set changed ends and later the same day hauled the errant sleeper west to Penzance Long Rock depot. Jon Hird / Craig Munday
