AS widely predicted, The Labour Party swept to power on July 4, and the new Government quickly set about making changes. In the King’s Speech at the subsequent State Opening of Parliament, it was announced that the plan to create Great British Railways would be an early objective – initially by taking control of passenger contracts held by private companies as those deals expire, but then later integrating management of those operations with the infrastructure responsibilities currently held by Network Rail.
