LAST month’s photo (shown again right) shows the Scapa Flow steam crane, believed to be the last standard gauge railway vehicle on the Orkney Islands and therefore the most northerly surviving standard gauge vehicle in Britain (as all those on the Shetlands were narrow gauge). It was taken by former TRM editor Nick Pigott who notes that, during the Second World War, the crane not only performed normal dockside duties but was used for lifting and pulling of anti-torpedo nets.
