LNER orders a‘Garratt’
AN order has been placed with Beyer, Peacock & Co Ltd, Manchester, by the London and North Eastern Railway for one powerful ‘Garratt’ locomotive.
It will be the largest engine in Great Britain and will have a tractive effort of some 62,000lb. The engine will consist of two eight-coupled systems and will weigh about 165tons. The grate area will be approximately 56 sq ft, and the four cylinders will be 21 inch diameter by 26 inch stroke. The wheel arrangement will be 2-8-0-0-8-2, and the coupled wheels 4 ft 8 in diameter.
